Tools and Equipment - Removing from Service

Hazard

Use of a damaged or degraded tool or piece of equipment exposes workers to various risks of injury. For example, a damaged or degraded ladder exposes workers to an increased risk of a fall from height and damaged, a degraded electrical cord exposes workers to an increased risk of electrocution.

Prevention

All tools and equipment are to be regularly inspected and maintained in good working condition in accordance with the requirements of the manufacturer and applicable codes and regulation. Tools an equipment equipped with electrical cords must be properly grounded (ground prong in place) with the exception of tools that are noted to be ‘double insulated’. Cutting and grinding tools such as mini-grinders must be equipped with a guard as specified by the manufacturer.

Practice

If there are any deficiencies found during inspection, the tool or other equipment must be clearly flagged with Danger Tape and removed from service until serviced, repaired, or disposed of.
