Hot Work

Purpose

To help prevent serious workplace injuries or fatalities or significant loss by informing employees of the coordination techniques and the hazards associated with Hot Work.

Hazards

  • Uncontrolled ignition of combustible or flammable material or liquids (P3:S1:F2=R6)

Prerequisites

  • Review and understand the Construction Fire Safety Plan for the project
  • Review and understand insurance warranty requirements for the project in regards to Hot Work

Precautions

Ongoing housekeeping will control, reduce, or eliminate accumulation of combustible or flammable debris. Regular inspection and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers will ensure functionality in the event of a fire.

Procedure

  1. Identify with Contractors where Hot Work will be occurring.
  2. Issue Hot Work Permit to Contractor prior to commencing Hot Work
  3. Regularly inspect area where Hot Work is occurring
  4. Receive and document return of Hot Work Permit once work is complete

Control Measures

Regularly inspect the workplace to ensure Hot Work Permit is in place for hot work on or adjacent to combustible material.
Stop the work and take immediate corrective action for any hot work taking place on or adjacent to combustible material without a permit. Corrective action will include documenting a Safety Violation for each occurrence.

Emergency Procedure

In the event of an ignition incident:

  1. Stop Work
  2. If safe to do so, arrest all controlled sources of ignition
  3. If safe to do so, use portable fire extinguisher to retard or extinguish the fire
  4. Follow the Incident Notification Protocol / Emergency Procedures for the site
