Traffic Control
Purpose
To help prevent serious workplace injuries or fatalities by informing employees of the coordination techniques and the hazards associated with Traffic Control.
Hazards
- Slip / Trip (P2:S4:F2=R8)
- Struck by mechanized equipment (P2:S1:F1=R4)
- Psychosocial (Public interaction) (P2:S3:F2=R7)
Prerequisites
- Perform a Risk Assessment of adjacent public traffic using tools from the TMM
- Identify where Traffic Control can be accomplished using signage and barriers
- Identify where signage and barriers will be insufficient and where a Traffic Control Person will be required
- Prepare a Traffic Control Plan for the work - a full Traffic Management Plan may be required.
Precautions
Limit the use of Traffic Control Persons wherever practicable and, where they are required, ensure each TCP has an escape route and protection from the elements.
Procedure
- Orient all Traffic Control Persons (TCP) for the workplace
- Verify that each TCP certificate is current
- Review Traffic Control Plan(s) for the work planned. This will be ongoing, each day
- Set up the Traffic Control Measures
- Ensure each TCP is outfitted and equiped as required by the OHS Regulations
- TCP go to their designated location
- Traffic Control Supervisor to coordinate providing breaks for TCP
- Once work is complete, remove Traffic Control Measures
Control Measures
Regularly inspect the Traffic Control areas to ensure systems and personnel are in appropriate locations.
Emergency Procedure
In the event of an incident (injury to worker, damage to equipment, any unplanned event)
- Stop Work
- Other available TCP control traffic
- Follow the Incident Notification Protocol / Emergency Procedures for the site
