Recommended Minimum First Aid
These recommended minimums are for regular construction and should be followed once PCML assumes the role of prime contractor. Staffing to achieve these minimums is at the discretion of the Site Superintendent. Circumstances like construction of Sale Offices or post-Occupancy will be addressed elsewhere.
First Shift
7 AM to 3 PM for most sites (7:30 AM start for some municipalities) Monday to Friday.
Workers | Primary First Aid Attendant | Secondary First Aid Attendant |
up to 9 | 1 Intermediate FAA | - |
10 to 99 | 1 Advanced FAA | 1 Intermediate FAA (or higher) |
100+ | 1 Advanced FAA | 1 Advanced FAA |
Any Intermediate FAA should also have their Transport endorsement.
Second Shift and other circumstances
Since most sites operate until 5 or 6 PM, another Advanced FAA should be scheduled to start at 9 or 10 AM. This provides coverage for longer site hours without requiring overtime and redundancy in case the First Shift Advanced FAA is not on site due to unplanned absence. Site activities will only need to be delayed until the Second Shift Advanced FAA is on duty. It also allows for breaks since without another FAA to cover the Primary FAA is always on duty, even during meal breaks.
If a Secondary FAA is not available for the full duration of the second shift then the Primary FAA must perform no other duties other than First Aid (i.e. remain in the First Aid Room and wait for an injury/incident) once the Secondary FAA is off-duty.
Equipment
For any site there needs to be:
• 1 Intermediate First Aid Kit to start with
• 1 Transport Kit – cervical collar(s), lifting device (spine board), stretcher, lower limb splints, vomit bag, blankets
Once there is an Advanced FAA on site you will also need:
• 1 Advanced First Aid Kit
• 1 Oxygen Therapy Kit – O2 cylinder, regulator, gauge, flow meter, NRB mask, nasal canula, airway kit, BVM, pulse oximeter, suction unit
Facilities
Once there are 20 or more workers on site;
• 1 First Aid Room - 100 sq ft
After Hours Work
Any workers planning to work past the regularly scheduled hours for the FAAs must be coordinated and documented by PCML in advance.
If there is work going on in less-accessible areas (e.g. excavations, areas only accessible by ladder, or requiring fall protection) 1 Intermediate FAA with Transport Endorsement can cover up to 8 additional workers.
If all work is at ground level, or areas that are easily accessible by stairway or hoist/elevator then it may be possible for 1 Basic FAA to cover up to 8 additional workers provided no fall protection is required, and no structural construction is undertaken.
